WHCC v Cockfosters (Conroy Cup)

The 1st XI got their season off to a flyer with a convincing win in the Conroy Cup against Cockfosters. Great knocks from both Tim Royal (103no) and Jack Irwin (111no) saw us on their way to an impressive 298/4 in the 40 overs. Cockfosters could only muster 82 in response with Siran Seevaratnam bagging 5 for 16 in his 5 overs. Scorecard

WHCC v Welwyn Garden City (Friendly)

Tougher work for the 1st XI the following Saturday in a home friendly against Welwyn Garden City. We struggled to just 171 with the final wicket falling in the 39th over. Best effort with the bat was Tobias Claridge-Hoare with 44. The opposition took things steady and knocked off the runs with 174/4 in the 37th. Scorecard
Welwyn Garden City v WHCC

A 2nd XI team captained by Jim Clarke and containing a number of younger players ventured to Welwyn Garden City for a friendly last Saturday. The more experienced home side batted first and our lads struggled to keep a lid on the scoring and WGC rattled up a stonking 369/7 in 45 overs. Pick of the bowlers was Hari Singh Hender with 3-53. The Hill batted their 45 overs but were never in the game reaching just 171. The top scorers were Amjad Butt with 47 and a fine knock of 30 from 14 year David Marion. Scorecard

Friendly XI v Edgeware

Not too much detail on this Sunday friendly I'm afraid and I'm not surprised as we got a bit of a shellacking. Edgeware batted first and posted 272/9 and in response we stumbled to 89 all out in 30 overs with 50 of the runs coming from Tim Royal.
And here a few sage words from your devoted Events and Social Sec Dom Philp...

G’day champ,

Welcome back to another season of sacrificing sunny Saturdays at the beach and guilt free Friday night circuits in exchange for 10 hours of crippling humiliation and public failure in front of 50 other blokes every weekend.

The 11th of May begins a new opportunity to impress the selectors and maybe even win the approval of your dad with a good looking 24 off 40 balls. So to mark the new season, the social section invites you to celebrate our first league match of the year with our Grade Cricketer “Yuck Shirt” night at the WHCC.

Work on your rig, grow your salad and prepare your best chop story for a circuit to end all circuits at the home of Grade Cricket.

The Throwdowns:

When: 11th of May; first league game of the season.

Time: After stumps until 12:30am (late license secured to get around the boys)

Where: The home of Grade Cricket, WHCC

Dress Code: Yuck shirts

What to expect: Player of the day, clubman of the week and a free jug of snakebite for “yuckest shirt.”

This year's Ground Force Day is taking place this weekend on Sunday 28th April. Please come down and offer a few hours of your time to help the Club prepare for the new season.

8.45am Free Breakfast before a 9.30am start

Also if you have any garden chairs or benches unused at home we'd be most grateful if you could donate them to the club. With a busy summer ahead players and spectators could do with something comfortable to sit on.

The molded stackable ones are best but anything would be most appreciated.

After the Easter break the colts season has finally kicked off this week with a full schedule of training and number of matches.

At time of writing 11A had bagged their first points with an accomplished win away to Holtwhites scoring an impressive 154 in 20 overs and restricting the oppo to just 40 runs. Well batted Max Robinson (37no) and Samuel Giles (35no).

However there was early season disappointment for the U15's in their key clash with Totteridge at the Hill on Thursday evening. Historically a tightly fought match our boys have had the better of things over the last season or two. But not on this occasion. Outgunned with the bat and naive in the field we let this one slip. WHCC stumbled fitfully to 119/6 from the allotted 17 overs with Totteridge biffing their way to 120/3 and victory in the 14th over.

Disappointingly three matches have already been conceded or cancelled by opposition. Frustrating news for our many eager young players.
